Instant Pot Terms and Abbreviations
I have compiled this list of terms/abbreviations for any newbies with new pots! Feel free to share!!
IP – Instant Pot
HP – High Pressure
LP – Low Pressure
NPR or NR– Natural Pressure Release – This is when the pot
releases pressure on its own over time.
QR – Quick Release – This is when you release the pressure immediately
by turning the knob from sealing to venting.
PIP – Pot in Pot – This means using another pot inside of
your Instant Pot to cook foods, like baked items.
Pressure Valve – The black knob on the top that allows you
to switch from sealing and venting.
Pin – the silver or red pin next to the Pressure Valve. When
in the up position, your pot is fully pressurized, when it is down your pot is
no longer pressurized and you can open the pot.
Sealing Ring – The silicone ring that sits inside the lid. This
ensures your pot is sealed closed. If this ring is not on properly your Instant
Pot will not function properly.
4-4-4, 5-5-5, 6-6-6 etc – A method used to cook eggs in the
pressure cooker. It means: Ex: 5 minutes on manual pressure: 5 minutes of
natural pressure release; 5 minutes soaking the eggs in an ice bath before you
peel them. (Same thing goes for 6-6-6) The difference is how hard your egg is
cooked.
EPC – Electric Pressure Cooker
Pot Head –Faithful Instant Pot user
Sling – Comes in silicone and other materials like foil.
Used for the PIP method to assist with removing your pot from the Instant Pot.
Exterior Pot – This is the electrical component of the pot.
Liner/Insert – The stainless steel portion of the pot that
is used to cook in. This also comes in ceramic.
Shield – It is located on the other side of the valve and is
a safety feature that prevents food from blocking the valve
Cheesecake #17 – this is literally a cheesecake recipe that
was tested 17 times.
Water Test – Referred to as the Initial Test Run by the
manufacturer is a test suggested by the manufacturer to ensure your pot is
working properly.
Condensation Collector – a small cup used to collect and “water”
that may leak from your pot over time.
Gem or Oval Instant Pot – This is NOT a pressure cooker, it
is more like a slow cooker/crock pot and roaster over.
